Unfortunately, we have not yet invented batteries that will last for months. And there are many devices that require a power supply in the house: a smart home system, IP cameras, a Wi-Fi router ...
The list is actually huge and all small devices are connected via a power supply.
Many people forget about this - each power supply unit has its own hours of guaranteed operation, after which it is better to replace the device.
But in practice, people do not change power supplies for many years, which can lead to very sad consequences, namely, to fire.
For myself, I made it a rule to check my power supplies every six months. I'll tell you my "checklist":
1. I inspect the power supply case for reflow and violation of the case geometry from high temperature. If I see suspicious changes, then I replace the block with a new one.
In general, it is better to check the temperature of the power supply more often than once every six months.
2. I examine the wire for damage, especially in places where it bends. Over time, the rubber sheath dries out and the insulation is damaged.
It will not shock you, but if the two contacts close together, then at least the power supply will fail. As a maximum, it can catch fire. It all depends on the design of the power supply.
3. During normal operation, the power supply should not emit strong odors. If the unit emits a chemical odor during operation, then such a device must also be replaced, since a strong smell is not only harmful to health, but also indicates that something is wrong with the power source.
Especially if a power supply unit that has already worked for a long time began to smell unpleasant. But for new devices, odor release is the norm for a while.
4. I measure the output voltage with a multimeter - it should correspond to the inscription on the sticker on the case with a small error. If the error is large, then it is better to replace such a power source with a new one.
It is also necessary to understand that the working power supply unit should not be cluttered with things and other objects - in in this case, there is a risk of overheating and further ignition of the device, and with them other things in home.
Yes, it is not always possible to find an original power source, for example, for an IP camera that was released 5 years ago.
In this case, I buy a universal power supply with voltage regulation, or I select a ready-made unit according to the parameters - voltage and current.
